GOLDEN, Colo., June 29, 2017 – The Department of Water Works of Michigan City, IN has been inducted into the CAST IRON PIPE SESQUICENTENNIAL CLUB. The Department, being a Municipal Water Utility, was inducted into the Cast Iron Pipe Sesquicentennial Club during a ceremony held at the Water Board Meeting Tuesday, June 27, 2017. Superintendent and Water Board members accepted the plaque from Regional Engineer, Mr. Paul Hansen of the Ductile Iron Pipe Research Association. According to Superintendent Russell, many of these Cast Iron water mains were installed prior to 1927. According to Superintendent Russell, many of these Cast Iron water mains were installed prior to 1927. The water main that was found back in the 1950’s by his father, who was Assistant Superintendent at the time, found a date molded into the bell of a Cast Iron Pipe dated 1864, and noted it on a service record. This pipe is still in service today and has not needed any repairs in the 43 years that I have been associated with the Department. The Department joins 21 other U.S. and Canadian utilities having Cast Iron water mains that have served continuously for over 150 years or more. The Cast Iron Pipe Century Club was organized in 1947 to recognize the longevity of service of cast iron water mains and has over 650 members. The Cast Iron Pipe Sesquicentennial Club was added in 1989. They are sponsored by the Ductile Iron Pipe Research Association, a 102-year old trade association representing manufacturers of ductile iron pipe which replaced cast iron pipe in 1978,
