According to Superintendent Russell, many of these Cast Iron water mains were installed prior to 1927. The water main that was found back in the 1950’s by his father, who was Assistant Superintendent at the time, found a date molded into the bell of a Cast Iron Pipe dated 1864, and noted it on a service record. The Department joins 21 other U.S. and Canadian utilities having Cast Iron water mains that have served continuously for over 150 years or more.
