Direct Tapping of Ductile Iron Pipe Encased in Polyethylene: Direct service tapping of operating Cast and Ductile Iron piping systems has been a common practice for more than 100 years. For the last 30 years, more and more direct taps have been performed on polyethylene encased iron pipe. The procedure outlined in this brochure is offered to assist in ensuring the quality of the polyethylene protection when making direct service connections.

Direct Tapping of 6-inch Pressure Class 350 Ductile Iron Pipe: Ductile Iron pipe can be readily field cut and tapped to fit normal and emergency situations. However, direct tapping of Ductile Iron pipe has long been a subject of controversy among engineers and water distribution system operators. In order to settle this controversy once and for all, DIPRA performed carefully controlled and fully observed laboratory tests on Ductile Iron pipe using direct tapping procedures.
